More FCC Meetings

Things definitely are happening. (See Michael's comment below.) We know about meetings and basically what ground they covered, but along with Verizon, we're still waiting for the FCC to act one way or another. Here are the meetings we know about this week (for comparison purposes, the previous meeting was June 27, and the one before that two weeks previous.7/15: Verizon with representatives of FCC Chairman Martin7/15: Verizon phone conference call with FCC Commissioner McDowell and staff7/16: Verizon and Rural Cellular (Unicel) with Renee Crittendon, legal advisor to FCC Commissioner Adelstein7/16: Verizon and Rural Cellular with Wayne Leighton, special advisor to FCC Commissioner Tate.Note to Verizon, Rural Cellular, and FCC: Please feel free to use any postings on this blog in considering public interest in the transaction and its timely completion.

Jesse, great job covering these Verizon bulletins. Thanks for your efforts.

Yes, thank you very much. I definitely check often for the most recent news. Hopefully it will all be resolved shortly.

Like I said about the Unicel camp there is a lot going on. I personally hope that August first is the date I can wait in line for my iPhone. I know that there is going to be a mandatory meeting with all Unicel people soon. I forgot the date. There could be something then.

If the issue is on the FCC's draft agenda for August 1, I would assume that's the earliest it can be approved. In view of the fact that the Vermont Attorney General has withdrawn his anti-trust objection, and because the proposed settlement addresses the Department of Justice concerns, I assume it will be approved. If it weren't going to be approved, they would still be meeting and wouldn't have put it on the agenda--yes?

As soon as the ink is dry, could they do something overnight? What has to happen? Some changes in software--that can be preflighted, and it's certainly not the first time this has happened. As for the Unicel stores, I assume it's a matter of removing the red and bringing in AT&T orange. Some stock changes of course. And those free-standing iPhone units. Press releases and ads are probably ready to go. It could be done overnight if they wanted to do it.

Based on Michael's comments, it sounds as if Unicel has it under control. Of course, to get it done overnight might take some extra help. They might get 1 or 2 people to work overnight for free (well, throw in a free iPhone and a free contract for 2 years). That would get the job done and get a ton of PR, but it's doubtful. I don't believe there are any recorded instances of people getting free iPhones under any circumstances (gifts are a different matter).

Of course, we're dealing with corporate giants here, so overnight would be out of character.
